Interview with Alissa

 1. Tell us a bit about yourself!
I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and I’m studying for my Masters in English Lit. I love tea, reading and writing, movies, radio, podcasts, cooking and baking, and dogs.

2. What are some things you are currently looking forward too?

I’m looking forward to fall, actually. October-December is my favourite time of year!
I can’t wait to get cozy in my apartment with spiced tea, autumn baking, and movies. Especially watching Harry Potter…for some reason this is such a fall thing for me.
In the near term I’m going on a short weekend trip with my boyfriend soon, really looking forward to getting away from the city. I’m also looking forward to graduating…soon hopefully.

3. Fall is on its way, what are some of your favorite fashions trends that appear during the autumnal season?

I much prefer fall dressing over spring/summer. I love bundling up in layers: scarves, tights, boots, sweaters, and hats. Ankle boots have been really popular for many seasons, and I love them because they are so comfortable and versatile.

4. Do you have any favorite movies you could watch over and over again?

Yes, I love watching movies, it’s one of my favourite things to do. It’s hard to pick favourites but I’d say In the Mood for Love, The Science of Sleep, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Taxi Driver, My Winnipeg, A Serious Man, East of Eden, Roman Holiday, My Man Godfrey, Amelie, Breathless, and Tokyo Story (actually this movie is so sad, I don’t think I can watch it again. It’s amazing though). Miyazaki movies too :) I could watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall any day because it’s so funny. Mean Girls and 13 Going on 30 are fun ones I could re-watch any day as well. Whenever I’m sick I always re-watch my favourite period pieces like Pride & Prejudice and Bright Star.
The movie I’ve watched the most is probably Moulin Rouge.

5. Is there a particular style of clothing that you really enjoy?

I tend to wear comfy clothes and shoes, because I hate being uncomfortable. That means I rarely wear heels. I usually stick to neutral and earth tones. I don’t wear a lot of bright colours and prints.
I like the whole minimal Scandinavian/avant-garde Japanese look in muted colour palettes and lots of assymmetry and beautiful draping.
But I also gravitate towards cozy Japanese mori girl-inspired looks. I guess that’s a weird combination but I can’t just stick to one look. The Japanese line pas de calais does a perfect “grown up mori girl” aesthetic that I love.

6. I am always looking for new music! Who are some of your favorite bands, or songs right now?

My boyfriend got me into Hayden, a Canadian singer-songwriter, and now I’m obsessed. He’s been around for a long time, and he has quite a following in Canada, but I only recently got into him. His music is very understated but I love his songwriting – it’s subtle, witty, and a little heartbreaking. His new album, Us Alone, is great.
Other than Hayden, lately I’ve been into Atoms For Peace (I listen to their album AMOK all the time), DIIV, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Foals, Hannah Georgas, Arctic Monkeys, and Mazzy Star. I’m addicted to Bloc Party’s new song, Ratchet,
Plus I’m always listening to my old favourites, like Radiohead, Blur, and Yo La Tengo.
7. Who are your favorite designers?
Although I can’t afford to shop for designer clothes, I do admire certain designers’ aesthetics. And sometimes I’m lucky and find things on super duper sale, or on consignment :)
I like Helmut Lang, Ann Demeulemeester, Tsumori Chisato, Comme des Garcons, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone, Acne, Haider Ackermann, Dries van Noten, APC, Alexander Wang, Ann-Sofie Back, Isabel Marant, Celine, Chloe, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake…etc

8. Do you have any favorite style icon celebrities?

I don’t know if I consider them icons, but I do love to see what Carey Mulligan and Clemence Poesy wear. And even though her look is more severe than I would wear, I love Rooney Mara’s look. I do take cues from some of the elements of her style.  I always find it interesting when people have a very defined “look” – something I can never quite commit to. I tend to be more interested in people’s casual styles than red carpet wear, though! It’s much more relatable and realistic.
I also admire Tilda Swinton’s style. Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon has cool style too. As for non-celebrities…I love the blogger Charlie May’s style. Susie Bubble was the one who really turned me onto fashion, though.

9. What is an everyday routine for you?

I drink tea every day. Some days I’ll start off with coffee instead, but I always switch to tea throughout the day. I love all types of tea, but especially green tea and Earl Grey.

10. Tell us your current reading list? Do you have any favorite books or novels you have been wanting to read?

Ironically enough, even though I’m a lit student, I rarely have time these days to read for pleasure. But I have a huge “to read” list, and I keep accumulating books I plan on reading.

My friend recently gave me Joan Didion’s Slouching Toward Bethlehem, which I’m loving so far. It’s a collection of essays she published in the 60′s – it gives a fascinating portrait of America and particularly California during the time. The first story, “Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream,” is a noirish take on the events surrounding a murder of a man by his wife.
I’m also reading Mordecai Richler’s Solomon Gursky Was Here. A while ago I read Eden Robinson’s Monkey Beach, which was pretty great. I’ve been wanting to read Sheila Heti, James Salter, Jeannette Winterson, and The Night Circus.
I have a million favourite books..some of them are The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, Hopeful Monsters by Hiromi Goto, The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, Barney’s Version by Mordecai Richler, Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. I’m sure I forgot something brilliant!
11. If you could go back in time and choose the era, what would it be?

The practical part of me says I wouldn’t go back in time, because the past kinda sucks in terms of opportunities and freedoms. I would choose the future, but then we have climate change to worry about…but since this question is purely fantasy anyway, I think I’d choose the ’20s, for the beautiful clothes, great music, and the parties :)

Luna Vida 1

1.Tell us a bit about yourself! Hi, I’m Allie! I’m 24 and I graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Anthropology. I have a life & style blog called LunaVida. I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember… but I may not have had as great as a grasp as I thought I did during my adolescence I am also a huge Harry Potter fan (Hufflepuffs, rep!). My number one passion, however, is animals. I’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years, and I’d like to work for an animal welfare nonprofit. (If you can’t tell from this blurb, my interests are very vast, haha.)

2. How did you first find your love for fashion? I grew up with two older sisters and my mom & grandma absolutely loved taking us out shopping on the weekends, so it was kind of instilled in me as a fun form of self expression from a young age. I was experimental throughout grade school, trying to find my “signature style” but looking back at photos, I had no clue what I was doing back then. So embarrassing!

3. What is a normal day like for you? On a typical day, I wake up, spend some time with my boyfriend, cat, and dog, and then go do one of my other favorite things: eat! I usually work out (my boyfriend and I just started “Insanity” the other week and it’s nearly killing me) and then spend some time blogging and checking out my favorite blogs, such as your’s! In the evening, I eat dinner, go for a swim, and usually watch a little Netflix before bed.

4.Go to fashion look? I’d say my go to look is generally pretty casual. Like I mentioned before, I spent some time experimenting with finding my own style and it turns out I like a lot of different looks. One day I may dress classically or vintage-y, then boho/hippy the next, and then super girly & feminine the next day. It’s always changing with my personal style!

5. Favorite designers? Ooooh, I love love love Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, Lanvin, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Of course, I can’t afford any of them but I can dream… and drool

6. Summer go to’s? My summer go to’s are definitely sundresses, lots of bracelets & rings, sunglasses, and open toe espadrille wedges. I love how a few simple pieces, that are so easy to wear, can look chic on anyone. Plus, as an added bonus, it’s nice and breezy for the hot weather!

7. What type of things are you looking forward to in the fall? I love this question, because I am SO looking forward to the fall. I am ready for it to cool down for sure (it’s typically around 108 degrees here in Phoenix — even at night!). I’m jonesin’ for hot apple cider, pumpkin carving, tights, infinity scarves, skinny jeans, thick socks, and BOOTS! Oh! And for “Catching Fire” to come out in theaters!!!

About Allie

FAQ:

How old are you? I am currently 24 years old young ;)

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Loveland, Ohio, but I moved to Tampa, Florida to go to college in 2007.  I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2011 with a B.A. in International Studies and a minor in Anthropology.  (Those are two areas of study that probably couldn’t be further from fashion, but what can I say?  My interests are vast!)  In April 2013, my boyfriend and I made the cross-country trek from Florida all the way to Phoenix, Arizona in search of a new life adventure.  We are loving it here so far.  (If you are in the area, we are always looking for suggestions of places to go hike, restaurants to try, etc so any of your knowledge is much appreciated!)

What’s the story of LunaVida? I had been toying around with the idea of starting a fashion blog for a while, but I was always too chicken.  I love looking at fashion blogs, but oftentimes the prices are so ridiculous that, what? 1% of recent college grads and the like could probably afford the items?  Therefore, I decided to base LunaVida on something I love to do myself: bargain shopping.  After I did some research and made some goals, LunaVida was born!

How did you come up with the name “LunaVida?” After I decided I was going to just grow some cojones and start my blog, my boyfriend and I went about brainstorming names for a few days.  I have a dog named Dakota Hufflepuff and a cat named Luna Lovegood (Did I forget to mention I am a Harry Potter fan?).  I am obsessed with both of them beyond what is considered normal… so I named my blog after my cat (…seriously).

How tall are you? I haven’t been measured in a hot minute, but the last time I was 5’8.5″

What do you like to do? I am a huge animal lover, so I love to spend time with my pets.  There is nothing better than taking a nice long hike with my boyfriend and puppy :)  I also have been a vegetarian for 10 years, so I like Pinterest-ing new veggie-friendly recipes to try (although I don’t actually like cooking all that much…).  I obviously like blogging and shopping too, as well as traveling as much as possible!

I really appreciate you reading my blog, and I hope you follow & check back often!

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Interview with Elizabeth (seamlessly lovely)

Tell Us a Bit about yourself:

tumblr_moe5ohBFxv1qajoago1_500

I’m a 21 art history major at the University of San Francisco but am from southern California and spend every summer back home in Orange County.  I’m so grateful to get to spend time in two beautiful places that are incredibly different. I love dancing around in chiffon dresses, warm nights with silk pajamas and lemonade, late starry-skied bonfires on the beach with friends, taking pictures with my minolta, and writing!

What are some fun things you have been up to this summer?

This has probably been one of the more relaxing summers I’ve ever had since my work schedule is very flexible.  I’m interning for a photographer in Laguna, learning how to run a gallery, and helping him sell at the Sawdust art festival.  Other than that, my friends and I do everything from pic-nics, having tea in San Juan Capistrano, bowling, the beach, and bars in Newport.  My best friend is interning in Venice and I really love going up there to shop and grab lunch with her. I also ventured to San Francisco for a weekend to hang out with some of my friends who are still in the city and see Father John Misty at the Fillmore!

Name some of your favorite summer styles:

I rarely wear pants, ever since I can remember I’ve just been more comfortable in dresses or skirts, so during the summer I love getting to throw my tights off and just put on something breezy and light.  I always love a good hat and have a floppy burnt orange one from Nasty Gal that makes me feel like a band-aid from Almost Famous. That paired with a black or white chiffon dress, some woven sandals, and a few rings is perfect for just about anything in southern California. I’ve also really adored the new overall trend along with loose button ups and some converse or pastel oxfords!

bC il_570xN.432462536_r67i images

What is a normal day like for you:

I’m a total morning person and love waking up early with the birds chirping, a fresh pot of coffee, and a big bowl of oatmeal.  I’ve gotten in the habit of hiking or swimming first thing which gives me so much energy for the rest of the day! My internship is only a few times a week, so if I’m not heading there I’ll do anything from reading all day in my backyard or adventuring around with friends.  I’m a home-body though, so I really love getting to spend time with my parents and cooking dinner with my mom.

Name some of your Favorite Summer Films?

I’m a huge fan of The Virgin Suicides, along with pretty much everything Sofia does, but Virgin Suicides just encompasses that wistful, restless summer feeling you have in suburbia.  Of course there’s a macabre twist, but I think the hazy, pastel cinematography is the perfect thing to watch on a sleepover.

I also love Before Sunrise and the idea of meeting a handsome stranger on summer vacation in Europe. Ethan Hawke is a babe, the script is wonderful, and there’s two movies following it, one of which just came out this summer!

Plans after this summer?

I’m going back up north for school and my senior year. I’m a little anxious about graduating college, but I’m finishing up the summer with a bang at Outside Lands music festival!

This girl rules and has some awesome prospecs in order it seems. Lovely taste in music, fashion and an alla round kind soul. Check out some photos of her summer!

Where do You Find your Inspiration when wanting to create one of your paintings?

Hello! I think most of my inspiration genuinely comes from nature & dreams. Whether it’s forest creatures, sirens of greek myth, strange little dreams I have about hidden realms, I find endless inspiration in this. Books also played an important part; I was a very avid book reader as a child. And I have to thank my muses (whether they are people I know or in my mind)

What Do You Love About Watercolor?

I love its translucent, watery (ha) fluidness, I used to paint with oil and acrylic but I love watercolor because it took me the longest to understand, in a way it still teaches me: how to capture the light, how to play with shadows and color.

What is your favorite Subject to Paint/draw?

Right now, forest inhabitants and birds, plants, anything that tells a story and has symbolism

How Did You Get into painting and art?

I am not sure. I started from a very young age and never stopped, no one taught me but I only drew when I was younger (pen, ink, pencil) it wasn’t until Autumn of 2011 I really started playing and learning watercolor. My father (when I was a child) painted with acrylic but he did it for fun: solar systems and portraits.

Daily Life

What is a normal day for you?

8498692598_a00ed53385_z

It varies but since I am on summer break:

I wake up in the morning; make coffee, a green smoothie with a vitamin & mineral powder, breakfast. I run some errands write in my journal and answer emails (fall down the pinterest wagon)

I usually spend my mornings & afternoons painting or drawing using the good light. If not I’ll come up with concepts, read books for inspiration and write them down. I make big lunches and lose myself again on pinterest or some website/blogs that I love. Then I keep on making art or knit, write letters, go for a walk, tend to my garden, post something on instagram, blog lalalala

Though it always changes, sometimes I go out and don’t come back til nighttime, or if my health isn’t great that day, I take it easy, pop a movie in and get rest.

List a few of your favorite foods and drinks:

I love vegan food, and I cook a lot of my own food because I have food allergies, I love sandwiches, homemade pizzas, oatmeal and Mexican food. I drink a lot of teas, coffee and water throughout the day. If I am going out, I love Follow your Heart café, Flore Vegan, Native Foods café!

Do you have any Pets?

A shih tzu named Mimi, I’m her human!

Style/Fashion

Describe your favorite type of style/clothing to wear:

I love vintage, pieces & styles from the 1920-50s, but if I am just going to be at home paintings/creating I usually wear comfy tanks, flowy dresses, movable breathable things I can do yoga/be a mermaid in/stretch at ease in. I love dressing up though.

Do you have a favorite designer?

I love Rodarte, Galliano, Jovovich-Hawk (no longer a brand), Alexandra Grecco, Rachel Antonoff, Alexander McQueen, Dear Creatures, Pamela Love, Littledoe, Samantha Pleet, anything from Bonadrag!

In the Future

Are you currently working on any projects that have you very excited?

I am working on creating some décor pieces made out of cedar, quartz and feathers. I will call them light-catchers. I am working on some art pieces for Thistle Magazine (check Thistle out!) finishing up some hand knitted items for autumn/winter, and more jewelry pieces.

I go through periods of not creating things because I have to plan it out, see it, visualize it, write it down and then work from there, if my heart isn’t it in, I’m not happy. So I step back to recoup and sow the seeds and let it bloom.

What are you looking forward too?

Life. Love. Spending each moment doing something, learning, exploring

Fun Facts and info

1.List the last three books you’ve read:

The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman

Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

& I am currently reading Cats Eye by Margeret Atwood

2. Favorite t.v. shows:

I don’t watch too much t.v! but I like Perception, but I usually watch Twin Peaks , Charmed, Twilight Zone, Oddities or Buffy on Netflix.

3. Current Summer Tunes You can’t stop listening too:

Anything by the Civil Wars, Beach House, Lana Del Rey and Mazzy Star

4. Era you should have been born in:

After reading Dandelion Wine I wanted to live in the 1920’s in the Midwest (the book takes place in 1928) a time very different than now, of simple joys and nostalgia, I think the past fascinates me a lot because I don’t know what its like. What is it like to only visit your friends if you wanted to see them, or having only old time radio and no films? But, then I read the Story Sisters and made me wish I lived north (west/east doesn’t matter) with a garden and creating realms in this day & age, hopefully being able to invite my friends (like you) living in a 2 story house with attic, ordering takeout while painting on large canvases. I can never decide, I wish I could experience everything.

I love this film. I know its older but i thought I would do a little review of it. So I love both the actors in this movie. John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph play a cute middle aged couple sort of living out their lives in the best way they can. Maya Rudolph is a medical artist and John Krasinski is a sort of home defense karate instructor. The pair make a sweet sort of indie hipster couple who want to start a new life as they prepare for the baby that is soon to come. They travel to multiple places meeting old friends and family members trying to decide what their new home is. The movie has a great soundtrack with music by Alexi Murdoch and Cohead and Cambria among others. This movie makes me feel so happy after I finish it. Their are some touching parts and you get to see couples whos lives are effected by family and children in good ways and bad. Its a sort of heart warming movie but with edge and good comedy.
